Requested by the associated Radio Amateurs of Long Beach and the City of Long Beach, GB5QM is the only amateur radio station ever licensed for operation aboard the Queen Mary, and the first time American were licensed to operate an amateur radio station aboard a British ship.
Operation of the reconstructed Wireless Room by the Associated Radio Amateurs of Long Beach, in cooperation with amateurs from local area amateur radio clubs, was officially started on April 22, 1979.
Over 83 volunteers from all over Southern California operate the Ham Shack with state of the art equipment on a daily basis between 1700 UTC and 0500 UTC (9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ) seven days a week.
